Information Governance Practitioner (FOI)
Location: Aylesbury
Overview
Are you motivated by transparency, fairness, and the responsible use of information? This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive and specialist team where your work will help shape the way the Council serves its residents. As an Information Governance Practitioner (FOI), you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the Council meets its legal obligations and continues to deliver high‑quality, timely responses under Freedom of Information (FOI) and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR).
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys analytical thinking, problem-solving, and working collaboratively across different services. If you’re driven, organised, and ready to apply your knowledge to real-world situations, we’d love to hear from you.
About us
Buckinghamshire Council is a relatively new organisation that combines the strengths and expertise of the previous five councils in the county to create positive change for local people, communities, and businesses. We are firmly focused on the future and have made a clear commitment to serve residents better and to provide stronger representation for Buckinghamshire, both locally and nationally.
About the role
You will be responsible for managing and delivering statutory information governance services, with a particular focus on FOI and EIR casework. Working as part of a small but high-performing team, you’ll take the lead on your own caseload, ensuring decisions are well‑reasoned, compliant, and clearly communicated.
Your day-to-day work will involve interpreting legislation, analysing evidence, engaging with services across the Council, and supporting continual improvements in how information is managed.
A few key aspects of the role include:
- Managing FOI/EIR cases from receipt to completion, applying exemptions and making evidence‑based decisions.
- Providing expert advice and clear guidance to internal teams and members of the public.
- Preparing accurate reports, correspondence and summaries, ensuring clear communication at all stages.
- Supporting service improvements and helping develop training and awareness materials.
This role offers plenty of variety and the chance to make a meaningful contribution to how the Council handles information responsibly and effectively.
About you
You’ll bring both technical expertise and excellent communication skills, enabling you to navigate complex legislation while keeping stakeholders informed and supported. You’ll be confident working independently, prioritising your workload and managing deadlines without compromising accuracy.
You will have substantial hands‑on experience with FOI/EIR and a sound understanding of data protection principles. You’ll also be someone who is comfortable analysing information, challenging inconsistencies, and producing clear, well‑structured responses.
We’re looking for someone who can demonstrate:
- Strong knowledge of FOI, EIR, GDPR and related information governance legislation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly.
- Strong organisational skills and a proactive approach to managing competing deadlines.
- Experience using case management systems and maintaining accurate records.
If you’re solution‑focused, confident in interpreting legislation, and ready to make a positive impact on the Council’s information governance practices, this could be the perfect next step in your career.
