Passionate about reducing our impact on the environment and helping others do the same? An exciting new opportunity has arisen in our team for a permanent Waste Prevention Support Officer.

Working alongside a range of internal and external stakeholders, you'll contribute to the design and development of waste prevention communications. You'll also provide professional advice on waste services and promote positive waste prevention behaviour change in customers through face-to-face engagement, events, activities and online content creation.

About us

The role sits within the Strategic Waste Management and Enforcement service. The team works collaboratively to undertake procurement of new service contracts, lead and deliver waste capital schemes, policy strategy reviews, behaviour change campaigns, manage a number of multi-million-pound waste contracts (energy from waste, household recycling centres) as well as deliver new waste infrastructure projects.

Within the team, we cover enforcement of fly-tipping, unlawful encampments and traveller communities. Collectively the team cover a wide range of work from enforcement to contract management, procurements, communications, behaviour change projects and front-facing customer service. Working within the wider team means there are plenty of opportunities for learning and development in both a formal and informal capacity.

About the role

In this varied and customer-focused role, you will be at the forefront of supporting Buckinghamshire residents to make informed and sustainable choices about their waste and recycling. Providing clear, professional advice and guidance, you will help residents understand the full range of services and facilities available, ensuring their needs are met effectively. You will handle and resolve enquiries and complaints with confidence and diplomacy, escalating more complex issues when needed, while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, data security and service standards.


Alongside your frontline work, you will play an important role in supporting service delivery and continuous improvement. This includes maintaining accurate records and producing reports, contributing to communications and engagement activities, and helping to design and deliver learning or promotional initiatives. You will support small projects, monitor performance and budgets within your area, and work collaboratively with colleagues, partners and volunteers.

About you

Educated to NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent, you will bring a strong commitment to customer service, with experience of engaging directly with the public and supporting behaviour change through clear, accessible advice. You are able to deal with enquiries sensitively and professionally, helping residents understand waste prevention and recycling options while promoting sustainable practices.

Organised and proactive, you are comfortable managing competing priorities, planning activities and delivering events across different locations. You work well both independently and as part of a team, contributing to shared targets and continuous improvement.
Essential criteria:
  • Experience of working in a customer-facing role, including direct engagement with the public
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, waste prevention, recycling and sustainability
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines
  • Experience of supporting or delivering events, activities or engagement initiatives
  • Good ICT skills, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and social media platforms
  • Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team to achieve service outcomes and targets
  • Ability to use initiative and contribute to the development of materials, content or activities

Please note that access to your own vehicle is an essential requirement for the role as there will be a need to travel across the county to various sites. Occasional weekend and out-of-hours work may be required.
