Waste Project Officer

Location: Aylesbury Vale

Overview

Are you passionate about delivering meaningful environmental improvements and helping shape the future of waste services? We're looking for a proactive and motivated Waste Project Officer to join our Strategic Waste Management team and play a key role in delivering exciting projects that improve recycling, waste treatment, Household Recycling Centres and wider waste services across Buckinghamshire. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on projects that make a visible difference to residents, communities and the environment while supporting innovative and sustainable service improvements.

As a Waste Project Officer, you'll work at the heart of service transformation, supporting major commissioning activities, contract management, infrastructure improvements and procurement projects. From helping deliver new disposal contracts and waste infrastructure upgrades to securing external funding and developing business cases, no two days will be the same. If you enjoy solving problems, working with a variety of stakeholders and turning ideas into practical improvements, this rewarding role offers the chance to develop your career while making a lasting impact.

About us

At Buckinghamshire Council, we are committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable services that provide value for money while supporting our environmental ambitions. Guided by our values of being Proud, Ambitious, Collaborative and Trustworthy, we continuously seek new ways to improve services and create positive outcomes for our residents and communities.

The Strategic Waste Management team is responsible for delivering and supporting a wide range of waste treatment, disposal, commissioning and infrastructure projects that help shape the future of waste services across Buckinghamshire. We are an enthusiastic, supportive and forward-thinking team that works closely with contractors, consultants, local authorities, regulators and industry experts to deliver innovative solutions. Joining us means becoming part of a team that values collaboration, encourages professional development and is committed to making a real environmental difference.

About the role

As a Waste Project Officer, you will lead and support projects that deliver improvements across waste treatment and disposal services, Household Recycling Centres and other key waste management activities. Working closely with commissioning, operational and contract management colleagues, you will help ensure services are efficient, effective and deliver value for money for residents and the Council. You will play an active role in supporting commissioning activities, monitoring contractor performance and identifying opportunities to improve service delivery.

Using recognised project management methodologies such as PRINCE2, you will coordinate and manage project activities from initial planning through to implementation and completion. This will include supporting the development of business cases, managing project documentation, monitoring risks and budgets, tracking progress against project plans and producing reports for senior decision-makers. You will contribute to a range of strategic initiatives, including infrastructure improvements at waste facilities, procurement and contract projects, policy development and compliance activities.

The role offers excellent variety and the opportunity to work with a wide range of stakeholders, including contractors, consultants, partner organisations, government bodies and internal teams. You will be responsible for researching opportunities, supporting funding bids, coordinating supplier activities and helping to identify innovative solutions to complex challenges. With a strong focus on continuous improvement, you will contribute to projects that enhance service performance, environmental outcomes and long-term sustainability across Buckinghamshire's waste services.

Any-Desk:

As an ‘any-desk’ worker, you’ll need to be connected to our network to access digital folders and resources, but this can either be from home or an office location when required. You will be required to work from the office a couple of times a week, depending on your role and team requirements.

About you

You are a highly organised and enthusiastic person with experience in waste management, environmental services or a related field. With experience of supporting or delivering projects, contract monitoring and service improvements, you will be comfortable managing multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of quality and attention to detail.

You will possess excellent communication and relationship building skills, enabling you to work confidently with colleagues, contractors, suppliers and external stakeholders. Skilled at analysing information and solving problems, you can identify opportunities for improvement, manage risks effectively and make well informed recommendations. Whether preparing reports, developing business cases or supporting procurement activities, you take pride in delivering high quality work that achieves positive outcomes.

Most importantly, you will be passionate about making a difference. You will enjoy working collaboratively as part of a supportive team, embracing new challenges and contributing innovative ideas that improve services and deliver environmental benefits. With a recognised project management qualification such as PRINCE2, strong organisational skills and a commitment to continuous improvement, you'll be ready to play a key role in delivering projects that help shape the future of waste management across Buckinghamshire
