Overview
Are you an experienced highways professional looking for an opportunity to make a visible impact on Buckinghamshire's highway network? We are looking for a proactive and customer-focused Area Inspector to join our Highways team.
As the face of a high-profile highways service, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving the county's highway network, investigating and resolving highway issues, engaging with residents and stakeholders, and ensuring that our assets are managed safely and effectively. This is an exciting opportunity to combine technical expertise, customer service, and problem-solving skills in a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same.
About us
Buckinghamshire Council's Highways Service is responsible for maintaining and improving one of the largest and most diverse highway networks in the country. Working within the Communities, Highways and Technical Services directorate, our teams are dedicated to delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable transport infrastructure for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The team consists of experienced highways professionals, including Area Inspectors, Safety Inspectors, Engineers, Technical Officers, and Alliance delivery partners. Together we work collaboratively to ensure the effective delivery of highways maintenance, inspections, planned improvements, and customer-focused services across Buckinghamshire.
Joining the team means becoming part of a supportive and knowledgeable environment where collaboration, professional development, and continuous improvement are encouraged. You'll have the opportunity to work alongside experts from across the service while building strong relationships with local communities, elected members, town and parish councils, and external stakeholders.
About the role
As an Area Inspector, you will be responsible for managing highways issues within an allocated area, ensuring customer enquiries are investigated, resolved, and communicated effectively. You will undertake inspections, raise accurate works orders, monitor completed works, and support the delivery of local highway improvement projects.
Key responsibilities include:
- Inspecting and assessing highway defects and customer reports.
- Responding to enquiries received through Fix My Street and other customer channels.
- Raising accurate works orders in accordance with Buckinghamshire Highways specifications and policies.
- Supporting compliance with the Highway Safety Inspection Policy and CDM Regulations.
- Liaising with local councillors, town and parish councils, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Undertaking post-completion audits to ensure works are delivered to the required standards.
- Supporting safety inspections and emergency response activities when required.
- Contributing technical expertise towards planned maintenance programmes and capital schemes.
- Producing technical plans and designs to help deliver local priorities.
- Supporting enforcement activities and providing evidence where required.
- Representing the Highways Service at meetings, community events, and stakeholder forums.
This is a highly visible role that offers a unique mix of technical highways work, stakeholder engagement, and project delivery. You'll have the opportunity to influence local priorities, improve the network for residents, and see the direct results of your work on the ground.
We are committed to supporting your professional development and offer opportunities to broaden your technical expertise, gain experience in project delivery, and develop your stakeholder management and leadership skills as part of a progressive highways service.
