About us
Buckinghamshire Council is a modern unitary authority that brings together the strengths, expertise and local knowledge of the county’s former councils to create positive change for local people, communities, and businesses. We are committed to shaping a positive future for Buckinghamshire, providing high quality services, strong local leadership and effective representation for Buckinghamshire at both local and national levels.
Planning Policy sits within the Spatial Planning and Climate Resilience service, as part of our Planning, Growth and Sustainability directorate.
Our Planning, Growth and Sustainability directorate work with partners to help shape the future of Buckinghamshire. We deliver services on planning, economic growth, regeneration, strategic infrastructure, transport and property.
A key opportunity to shape the future is the Local Plan for Buckinghamshire Local Plan that we are currently preparing, it reached the Regulation 19 stage in July 2026. This very ambitious first unitary local plan has involved working across our different services and with our partners. We are active in supporting many towns and parish councils as they prepare neighbourhood plans, as well as ensuring we have high quality development monitoring information in place to underpin all we do.
About the role
As our Planning Policy Officer, you will be involved in the development of the Council’s Local Plan which seeks to meet the needs of Buckinghamshire to 2045. This will entail working with others on the development of planning policies including any suggested changes to the forthcoming local plan examiner. Also using published evidence base documents with any updates needed and preparing site delivery statements or statements of common ground to support the submission and examination of the plan.
You will be part of a large team that delivers an efficient, high quality, resilient and customer focused service to the residents of Buckinghamshire working effectively with all members of the team to provide the required Planning Policy advice and relevant documents.
You will also be involved in supporting officers with undertaking development monitoring systems, research and contributing towards monitoring reports. You will deal with enquiries and correspondence and provide support and advice to customers including town and parish councils.
We want to play to your strengths but also provide the opportunity for you to develop and broaden your skills and experience, and we will provide the right support to help you do that. As part of a larger team, you will benefit from working alongside colleagues with a wide range of experience across different topics.
Any-Desk:
As an ‘any-desk’ worker, you’ll need to be connected to our network to access digital folders and resources, but this can either be from home or an office location when required. You will be required to work from the office a couple of times a week, depending on your role and team requirements.
About you
You will have excellent interpersonal, written and analytical skills with some experience of working in a planning environment, ideally in planning policy. You will have a flexible approach to work, have good organisational skills and contribute positively in a team environment.
You will have a degree in Planning, or have evidence of commitment to begin or/be working towards a planning degree. You will ideally have full membership of RTPI (or be eligible for membership).
