Aylesbury Senior Area Supervisor

Location: Aylesbury

Overview

Are you a passionate people leader who thrives on delivering excellent customer service and making a real difference in local communities?

Buckinghamshire Libraries are looking for a dynamic and motivated Senior Area Supervisor to help lead the delivery of our innovative Library Flex model across multiple library locations, including Aylesbury, Princes Risborough and Buckingham. Working closely with Area Managers, you'll play a key role in developing teams, supporting volunteers, enhancing customer experiences, and ensuring our libraries remain vibrant spaces that connect residents with services, opportunities and support.

The role is being offered on a 32.75 hour per week contract.

About us

At Buckinghamshire Libraries, we are transforming libraries into vibrant community hubs that connect people, services and opportunities. Our libraries are much more than places to borrow books. They are welcoming spaces where residents can access council services, improve digital skills, support their health and wellbeing, engage in cultural activities and build stronger community connections.

As a Senior Area Supervisor, you will be part of the Aylesbury Area Management Team, working alongside passionate and supportive colleagues who are committed to delivering excellent services across our communities.

About the role

As a Senior Area Supervisor, you will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operation of multiple library locations, ensuring services are delivered efficiently and consistently while maintaining the highest standards of customer care.

You'll lead and develop teams of staff and volunteers, provide guidance to Library Supervisors, and support Area Managers in delivering resilient, customer-focused services. The role will involve working flexibly across a number of library sites, taking responsibility for building management, health and safety compliance, service performance, and operational delivery.

You will also:

  • Lead and support staff through change, development and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage customer enquiries, feedback and complaints, ensuring effective resolutions.
  • Recruit, motivate and develop staff and volunteers to deliver excellent services.
  • Build strong partnerships with community organisations and local stakeholders.
  • Support health and wellbeing initiatives, cultural activities and digital inclusion programmes.
  • Oversee site management, maintenance requests and health and safety requirements.
  • Analyse service information and contribute to reports, projects and service improvements.
  • Promote library services, events, room bookings and engagement opportunities across the community.
  • Deputise for Area Managers when required

Fixed

As a ‘fixed’ worker, you’ll spend most of your time in the same location, which will likely be a fixed office or location where your role is performed. Typically, you’ll be based in the same location as the rest of your team, because you provide a particular service from that fixed location or need access to information there.

About you

We're looking for a confident and engaging leader with a passion for people, community services and customer excellence.

You will bring:

  • Significant experience managing and developing teams.
  • Experience leading teams through periods of change and improvement.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to confidently resolve complex queries and complaints.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with colleagues, customers, volunteers and stakeholders.
  • Experience managing buildings, facilities or operational sites, including health and safety responsibilities.
  • A collaborative approach and experience building positive relationships with partners and community organisations.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Good ICT skills, including Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and support others with digital systems.
  • A high level of literacy, numeracy and attention to detail.
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) and education to NVQ Level 3, HNC or equivalent
