Building Assistant

Location: Aylesbury

Overview

Do you enjoy practical, hands-on work and take pride in creating safe, welcoming environments? Are you someone who can turn their hand to a variety of tasks while delivering excellent customer service?

We're looking for a Building Assistant to support the day-to-day operation of our corporate buildings. This is a varied and rewarding role where you'll play a key part in ensuring our sites remain safe, secure, well-maintained and ready to support staff, residents, councillors, tenants and visitors. From setting up meeting spaces to supporting health and safety compliance and responding to building issues, you'll help keep our buildings running smoothly every day.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive Facilities Management team and make a visible difference to the services delivered across Buckinghamshire Council.

About us

You’ll join our Communities Directorate within Corporate Property & Assets (Estate Management), supporting the effective management and compliance of a diverse and complex property portfolio.  Our work enables vital public services to operate safely and efficiently, so what we do makes a real difference every day.

About the role

As a Building Assistant, you'll be responsible for delivering a wide range of facilities management services under the direction of the Building Manager. You'll help ensure the building operates efficiently, safely and professionally while providing excellent support to customers and colleagues.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining the safety, security and presentation of the building at all times.
  • Monitoring and supporting building security and access control systems, including issuing access badges.
  • Setting up meeting rooms, committee spaces and event areas to meet customer requirements.
  • Supporting health and safety compliance, including Fire Marshal duties, incident reporting and building evacuations.
  • Responding to building maintenance issues and coordinating remedial works through the Facilities Helpdesk.
  • Providing operational support during building opening hours and assisting with emergency planning activities.
  • Managing room booking requests and ensuring facilities are prepared and ready for use.
  • Liaising with customers, staff, councillors, contractors and external organisations to deliver a professional service.
  • Supporting financial administration, invoicing, ordering processes and maintaining accurate records.
  • Working with IT Services to ensure equipment and technology remain operational for building users.

Fixed

As a ‘fixed’ worker, you’ll spend most of your time in the same location, which will likely be a fixed office or location where your role is performed. Typically, you’ll be based in the same location as the rest of your team, because you provide a particular service from that fixed location or need access to information there.

About you

We're looking for someone who is reliable, customer-focused and enjoys working in a busy operational environment.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience within facilities management, caretaking, building operations or a similar environment.
  • A good understanding of health and safety requirements and safe working practices.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise competing demands.
  • Experience maintaining accurate records and carrying out administrative tasks.
  • Basic ICT skills, including the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and the confidence to work independently when required.
  • GCSEs, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualification.
  • A full driving licence
